INTRODUCTIONS
Child abuse's trend has been on the
rise in Malaysia. It is a globally relative issue as this issue can be
witnessed families across the world. The definition of child abuse has been
debated frequently. It is a state of emotional, physical, neglect and sexual
maltreatment or economic or other exploitation meted out to a person aged less
than 18 years of age, resulting in potential or actual harm to child’s health,
survival and dignity.
Child abuse falls down to
different categories, these categories are emotional abuse, physical abuse
family violence sexual abuse and organized sexual abuse. (Adults Surviving
Child Abuse) Under these categories there search will only be focusing on two categories
of child abuse which are physical abuse and emotional abuse.
Physical abuse of a child is
defined as those acts of commission by a caregiver that cause actual physical
harm or have the potential for harm. Sexual abuse is defined as those acts
where a caregiver uses a child for sexual gratification. Emotional abuse
includes the failure of a caregiver to provide an appropriate and supportive
environment, and includes acts that have an adverse effect on the emotional
health and development of a child. Such acts include restricting a child’s movements,
denigration, ridicule, threats and intimidation, discrimination, rejection and
other nonphysical forms of hostile treatment.
